What We Do
Enhancing Performance
Human Factors
To be truly effective in our work, as humans we need to question more – after all, what are we actually scared of?
In all of our work, we use the RIP framework: Recognise, Identify, Promote – this serves as a powerful guide in human factors coaching, focusing on enhancing team awareness, spotting potential challenges, and encouraging positive change.
Through this approach, teams are encouraged to recognise patterns or behaviours affecting performance, identify underlying factors that may be limiting effectiveness, and promote actions that strengthen team dynamics and safety. It’s a structured, forward-thinking approach to fostering resilient, high-performing teams across industries where human factors are critical.
In aviation, Human Factors focuses on improving safety and efficiency by understanding the interaction between people, technology, and processes. It involves Crew Resource Management (CRM), which addresses communication, decision-making, situational awareness, and teamwork in the cockpit and between flight crews. Human factors in airlines also include the design of aircraft systems and workflows to reduce human error and ensure optimal performance, both in routine operations and under high-pressure situations.
In the nuclear sector, Human Factors are critical for preventing errors that could lead to catastrophic consequences. The focus is on enhancing operator performance, especially in control rooms, by ensuring systems are user-friendly and by fostering a culture of safety. Training is crucial, especially around decision-making, communication, and fatigue management. Additionally, human factors engineering is used to design interfaces and processes that help operators manage complex systems safely and efficiently.
The Human Factors approach in oil and gas aims to reduce risks in hazardous environments, such as offshore drilling platforms. This industry focuses on safety, particularly in high-pressure situations where errors can lead to environmental disasters or loss of life. Key areas include ergonomic design, fatigue management, clear communication protocols, and decision-making under stress. Human factors help ensure that equipment, processes, and procedures are aligned with human capabilities and limitations.
In healthcare, Human Factors are crucial for patient safety and effective care delivery. The industry focuses on improving interactions between healthcare providers, medical devices, and systems. This includes reducing human error in diagnosis, treatment, and medication administration, as well as designing safer work environments and better workflows. Teamwork, communication, and the prevention of burnout among medical staff are also key elements of human factors in healthcare.
A Just Culture Approach
Human Factors in Construction
Human Factors is increasingly being recognised as a critical element in improving safety and performance within the construction industry. As projects grow in complexity and the demand for safer practices intensifies, understanding how humans interact with processes, tools, and environments has become essential.
A significant shift in the construction industry is the move towards a Just Culture. This concept promotes an open, blame-free environment where workers can report errors or near-misses without fear of punishment, allowing organisations to learn from mistakes and improve safety protocols. In construction, this approach is crucial because it encourages transparency, leading to better risk management and reduced accidents.
The Building a Safer Future initiative, launched in response to the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, is at the forefront of promoting Human Factors within the industry. It aims to drive systemic change in building safety and compliance, focusing on improving communication, accountability, and decision-making across all levels of construction. By incorporating Human Factors principles, such as designing systems that support human performance and reducing the likelihood of error, the initiative helps ensure that safety is prioritised from the planning stage to project completion.
Human Factors in construction now includes attention to fatigue management, mental wellbeing, clear communication, and the creation of workflows that account for human limitations. These changes are essential for fostering a Just Culture, where learning from mistakes takes precedence over blame, and ultimately contributes to a safer, more resilient construction environment.

Strengthening Safety and Team Dynamics
Crew Resource Management
Crew Resource Management (CRM) promotes safety and operational effectiveness by helping teams identify potential risks and acknowledge the vital role of communication, teamwork, and decision-making. Initially designed for aviation, CRM focuses on critical interpersonal skills that strengthen situational awareness and ensure that every team member’s input is valued. Our CRM training supports individuals and teams to manage stress, make informed decisions, and communicate clearly in high-stakes situations. With CRM, organisations can establish a strong, adaptable team dynamic, promoting safety and performance at every level.
Oil & Gas
In the high-stakes Oil & Gas sector, CRM enhances safety and operational effectiveness. Looking at identifying and addressing communication breakdowns, CRM fosters clear communication across teams and acknowledges the importance of situational awareness to prevent incidents. It promotes effective decision-making under pressure, which is crucial in this environment.
Aviation
CRM was born in aviation, where it remains vital. From the cockpit to ground operations, we use CRM to support teams to identify potential risks, communicate openly, and make collaborative decisions. It’s essential in promoting an environment where quick, informed responses safeguard passengers and crew in fast-changing situations.
Construction
Construction teams may benefit from CRM by improving coordination and ensuring that every worker’s perspective is acknowledged, especially in complex projects. Our use of CRM promotes clear communication, accurate risk assessments, and a proactive approach to identifying safety hazards, making it invaluable for creating safer worksites and more efficient project management.
Construction is shifting toward a Just Culture, a concept developed by psychologist James Reason. This approach promotes accountability, drawing a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable behaviours. By encouraging honesty and a focus on learning from mistakes instead of placing blame, Just Culture creates an environment where employees feel more comfortable reporting issues and errors. This marks an essential shift for an industry traditionally associated with a strong blame culture, promoting a more progressive, open industry.
Nuclear
In the Nuclear industry, CRM promotes rigorous standards for safety and precision. We help teams identify potential risks early and communicate effectively during critical procedures, where the smallest error can have significant consequences. CRM also supports stress management, fostering a culture that prioritises meticulous communication and informed decision-making at every stage.
TOP Training
Team & Organisational Performance
At Cobalt Human Solutions, our TOP Training programmes are designed to help your teams function at their highest level. We focus on what we call our 4 Ps: Purpose, Parameters, Processes and Procedures, and People as the foundation, before working with your teams to then look deeper into you can achieve the ultimate team and organisational performance. By addressing these, we help you create high-performing teams that are empowered, engaged, and ready to meet any challenge.
Do your teams truly understand why they’re doing what they’re doing? When people know their purpose, they’re more engaged, motivated, and less likely to simply go through the motions.
